International Experience Canada
International Experience Canada (IEC) refers to a set of programs that allow students as well as other young people from different countries to obtain a temporary work permit, thus, allowing them to live there while also being able to provide for their families. Applicants, in the age group 18 – 35 years, from the countries eligible to participate in IEC have the benefit of being issued the work permit for a maximum period of two years, if selected.
IEC is a set of three programs, which work as bilateral agreement between Canada and the countries participating in IEC. This means that Canadian citizens are also eligible for a similar sort of work permit quota in any of the participating country. The exact details of this bilateral agreement, however, differ from country to country.
The probability of selection of a participant depends upon the type of program opted, quota as well as the country of origin. The three programs encompassed by IEC are listed as follow –
• Working Holiday
• International Co – op Internship
• Young Professionals
However, participants from different countries are eligible to apply for different kinds of programs. Some countries allow participation in one program only, some in two and some in all three. To some extent, this also depends on the diplomatic relations that Canada shares with the concerned nation.
Following is the list of programs offered under IEC –
Working Holiday
International Experience Canada’s Working Holiday Program allows people to work anywhere in Canada with any employer for the authorized time duration, which can vary from six months to two years. This program specifically benefits young individuals who wish to gain hands – on experience in their fields or just want to earn some extra money to better their living standards.
International Co – op Internship
IEC’s International Co – op Internship is specifically targeted at students enrolled in post – secondary institutions. Under this program, students can obtain an employer – specific work permit in the respective field. The prerequisite for applying under this program is that the students should have an official offer of employment from a Canadian employer in the designated field of study.
Young Professionals
International Experience Canada’s Young Professionals Program is targeted at individuals who wish to obtain an employer – specific work permit to allow them gain professional work experience in Canada. Just like the International Co – op Internship, the individual should possess a signed offer of employment from a Canadian employer. The job should cater to the student’s professional development in the designated field of study.
