Ottawa, October 10, 2023 – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced Canada’s commitment to support migrants in the Americas. Key points include:
– Canada has pledged to welcome 15,000 migrants from the Western Hemisphere to address forced displacement and promote regular migration.
– This includes the welcoming of 4,000 temporary foreign workers from the region and collaboration with NGOs for the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot.
– A significant update is the introduction of a new humanitarian permanent residence pathway for up to 11,000 Colombians, Haitians, and Venezuelans. Eligibility revolves around family connections in Canada, such as being a child, spouse, or sibling of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
– The pathway will offer enhanced pre-arrival services for successful applicants.
– Canada is collaborating with international organizations like the UNHCR and IOM to address migration challenges in the region.
– Alongside welcoming migrants, Canada is also investing $75 million over six years in projects to strengthen asylum capacity and improve migrant integration in Latin American and Caribbean communities.
– Minister Miller emphasized the challenges of global displacement and highlighted the dangerous situations many migrants face, such as crossing the Darien Gap. Collaborative measures with the US aim to encourage safe migration and reduce irregular migration in the Americas.
