If you are a Canadian permanent resident traveling abroad and your PR card has expired, been lost, or stolen, you may face challenges returning to Canada. The good news is that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) allows permanent residents to apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to re-enter the country by airplane, bus, boat, or train.
What Is a PRTD and When Do You Need One?
A Permanent Resident Travel Document is an official document issued by IRCC that lets permanent residents re-enter Canada when they do not have a valid PR card.
You’ll need a PRTD if:
- Your PR card expired while you were outside Canada, or
- Your card was lost, stolen, or damaged, and you must travel back by commercial transport.
PRTDs are generally valid for one single entry. Once you return to Canada, you should apply for a new PR card immediately to avoid future travel issues.
How to Apply for a PRTD
You can apply online through IRCC’s secure portal or at the nearest Canadian visa office abroad. The current government fee for a PRTD is $50 CAD, and IRCC processes most applications on a priority basis.
When applying, you will need to provide:
- Proof of your permanent resident status (such as a Record of Landing or PR card copy)
- Travel documents like your passport
- Evidence that you meet the residency obligation (usually 730 days in Canada within the last five years)
- Payment receipt and any requested forms
Processing Time and Tips
Processing times vary by location, but IRCC generally treats these applications as urgent to help residents return quickly. Be sure to:
- Apply as soon as you realize your PR card is not valid
- Avoid purchasing new travel tickets until you receive your PRTD
- Check your local visa office instructions for country-specific submission steps
Giving Up Permanent Resident Status (If Applicable)
If you no longer wish to keep your Canadian permanent residence and plan to visit Canada as a temporary visitor, you should formally renounce your PR status rather than applying for a PRTD. This process is voluntary and can be completed online through IRCC’s portal.

FAQ – Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD)
Q1: Can I travel back to Canada without a PR card or PRTD?
No. Airlines and other commercial carriers will not allow boarding without valid proof of permanent resident status or a PRTD.
Q2: How long is a PRTD valid?
A PRTD is typically valid for one entry only. Once you return to Canada, you must apply for a new PR card.
Q3: What if I don’t meet the 730-day residency requirement?
You may still apply and explain your circumstances. IRCC will review your situation and decide whether humanitarian or other factors justify re-entry.
