As Canada continues to diversify its immigration programs, the Welcoming Francophone Communities initiative stands out as a cornerstone effort to support the integration of French-speaking newcomers across the country. Launched under the Policy on Francophone Immigration and co-led by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and national Francophone partners, this initiative is helping foster vibrant, inclusive, and economically thriving French-speaking communities.
What Is the Welcoming Francophone Communities Initiative?
The initiative is built on a “by and for Francophones” approach, meaning Francophone communities themselves played a leading role in identifying the 24 participating host communities. These include Acadian and Francophone municipalities across Canada, each selected to promote successful integration and a sense of belonging for newcomers.
Originally piloted from 2020 to March 2024, the initiative was renewed and expanded in 2024, growing from 14 to 24 communities. These communities offer comprehensive settlement support to French-speaking immigrants, including access to public services, employment pathways, civic engagement opportunities, and welcoming public spaces.
