Since the launch of the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) in March 2022, many Ukrainians have found temporary refuge in Canada. While the application window for CUAET closed on July 15, 2023, and the deadline to enter Canada under this program was March 31, 2024, Government of Canada, those already in Canada under CUAET still have options to extend their stay, work, or study. Here’s what you need to know:​


1. Extending Your Stay in Canada

If you arrived in Canada on or before March 31, 2024, under the CUAET program, you may be eligible to apply for.

  • Open Work Permit: Allows you to work for any employer in Canada.​

  • Study Permit: Enables you to pursue education in Canada.​

  • Extension of Temporary Resident Status: Continues your legal stay in Canada.​

Application Deadline: Submit your application by March 31, 2026. ​

2. Applying for a New Work or Study Permit

For those looking to apply for a new work or study permit:

  • Eligibility: You must meet all standard eligibility requirements.​

  • Process: Apply through the regular application process.​

  • Fees: Standard processing fees are applicable.

Important: If you arrived in Canada after March 31, 2024, you are not eligible for the temporary measures under CUAET and must follow the regular immigration processes. ​


3. Permanent Residence Pathway

A special permanent residence pathway was available for Ukrainian nationals with family members in Canada. However, this program closed on October 22, 2024. Applications submitted before this date will continue to be processed. ​


4. Settlement Services and Support

Ukrainians in Canada under the CUAET program can access free settlement services until March 31, 2025, including:​

  • Language Assessments and Classes: Improve your English or French skills.​

  • Employment Services: Assistance with job searches and resume building.​

  • Housing Support: Help finding accommodation.​

  • Manitoba: Covers the cost of medical examinations for CUAET arrivals.​
