Canada Super Visa Expands Health Insurance Options

Easier Access to the Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents

Effective January 28, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has eased the health insurance requirements for the Canada Super Visa, making it easier for parents and grandparents to visit their loved ones. Previously, applicants were required to obtain private health insurance exclusively from Canadian providers. With the new policy, Super Visa applicants can now purchase health insurance from foreign insurers, provided the insurance company is authorized by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI).

This change offers greater flexibility and affordability for families seeking to reunite under the Super Visa program. By allowing foreign health insurance providers to be eligible, this update broadens the options available to applicants and reduces potential financial burdens.

How to Ensure Your Health Insurance Meets Super Visa Requirements

For a foreign insurance provider’s policy to be valid, it must:
âś” Be issued by an OSFI-authorized company that offers accident and sickness insurance
✔ Appear on OSFI’s list of federally regulated financial institutions
âś” Clearly state that the policy was issued as part of its insurance business in Canada

Additionally, all Super Visa insurance plans—whether from Canada or abroad—must:
âś” Be valid for at least one year from the date of entry
âś” Cover healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation
âś” Provide a minimum of $100,000 in coverage

Super Visa holders must maintain valid health insurance for the duration of their stay in Canada, as lapses in coverage could affect their ability to remain in the country. It’s crucial to ensure that the coverage is continuous and fulfills all required criteria to avoid any complications upon entry.
